Mother's day is a day that is dedicated to mothers across the world to honour them for their special contribution to the lives of their children as well as society. Different countries celebrate this day in different ways. According to historians, mother's day celebration originated from the ancient Romans and Greeks who are said to have first celebrated it as a holiday at a time when there was a festival of various mother goddesses. However, it is believed to have begun during the civil war period.
The origins and importance of this day can also be traced back to Ann Jarvis, who was a young wife in 1858 who initiated the 'mother's work day' culture in a bid to force the Union and Confederate union to which she belonged to work together even if for a single day. This was continued by her daughter following her demise by passing five hundred white roses to all the mothers in the congregation at her church, an idea that was soon replicated throughout the rest of the United States of America.
It was not until 1914 when the Congress passed a decision that saw the second Sunday of every month of May declared as Mother's Day, marking its first official observance under President Woodrow Wilson, who also made a speech through which he honoured mothers whose sons were lost during war. Today, mother's day is celebrated by families and households as a way of thanking mothers for their hard work and contribution to their lives. In fact, on this particular day mothers are encouraged to relax by having the privilege of getting to be served breakfast from their beds, accompanied by tokens and gifts such as jewellery, flowers or being treated at the spa. Some children could also take their mothers out to dinner. Other mother's day gift ideas include writing your mother a letter or draw a special picture that will appropriately convey your appreciation for her immense contribution wholeheartedly.
